Meaning of color in graduation stoles
In most instances, college students wear graduation cords and stoles, thecollege graduation gownsthat are of the same type during their commencement ceremonies. Basically, stoles are pieces of cloth that are colored and have ceremonial significance; they are worn on top of the students’ graduation attires such that they come to rest on the shoulders of students. Traditionally stoles derive the meaning of the colors from the college or field of study of the students. They can also be a representation of some form of membership or a certain fraternity, a member of a certain ethnic club or even better membership of some professional organization. In most instances, stoles are rented or even better purchased from the university’s bookshop or a retailer nearby to whom the university has opted to outsource these services. Students who are receiving bachelors’, master’s degree, doctoral degrees, and even postdoctoral degrees wear them.
Stoles that are worn by member of an academic society in most instances scarves are worn after one has worn the other academic regalia and members of a certain academic society wear them. One example of such society is the National Dental Honor society. These organizations approved the use of stole using the colors of the organization. Navy blue and has embroidery that has been rimmed with lilac for the dentistry field of study. On a general note, the shade of the stole is meant to compliment the field of study of the student. Considering that all major fields have their own colors and affiliations. For example, crimson is used for arts courses and sciences use blue. Architecture uses violet whereas engineering fields uses orange.
Students who are affiliated to the Greek Letter may opt to put on graduation scarf’s that have the same shades as that of their society. The color of the African American society is Sigma. For honors and awards are known to quite popular when students are being bestowed with awards and or when a student reaches or is being named for an academic distinction. The Academic Council of Education, the body responsible for regulating these shades released guidelines on the proper academic regalia in which they advised to wear gold cords so that they demonstrate the achievement of the student that is being mentioned. Other honors and awards such as being elected to some societies are advised to be in blue cords. If there is a student who is wearing scarf for distinction purposes, they should wear them with shades that match. Gold or blue colored depending on the distinction they have accrued.
It is important to note that if your school does not provide soles for graduation, you can go ahead and order one that has been tailor-made or customized for you. There are a number of online sites that do this and will design that will work for you. Another name for these regalia is academic sole or academic sash. These have always been with and they will continue being around as long as we have graduation ceremonies.
