In the middle age of the seventeenth-century gown was first introduced by European people. A gown is usually an outer loose garment from knee to full length worn by both women and men.
Academic apparels are traditional clothing, mainly worn by a student who has completed their graduation or have been admitted to the university degree or holding the same status in the Graduation Ceremony. But in many ancient universities have a formal dress worn by daily basis for a lesser degree of graduation. There are certain learning societies and institutions that are wearing academic dress as official dress such as judiciary, parliament, etc.
There are three basic types of individual gowns in United States of America. The candidates of first degree and student of bachelor wear black apparel. The candidates of master degree wear same as the intercollegiate master’s gown and the candidates of doctor’s degree wear crimson silk apparel. Each design has symbolic meaning with contrast of degree.
Nowadays, almost all level of education, student has their own academic dress. From kindergarten to university in almost every county have their academic dresses or gowns. Academic dress symbolizes the specific institution and holding its significant meaning and upfront the history of excellences.
In France, academic dress is also known as ‘toge’ which is similar to French judge’s court dress, but different in color depending on the academic field in which the wearer graduated. Sword is an identical model to that of French Police Commissars. Professor who served 20 years are presented sometimes with sword in French.
In German, official apparel are known also as ‘Talar’ which means ankles. Scholar wear black long apparel wide sleeves like Europe and America. In the middle ages, scholars wear apparel in everyday for holding their status. Protestant pastors, judges and rabbis have their specific apparel with different design, color, length, draping and shave. The garment of German Supreme Court is complete dark red. Students and graduates don’t wear gowns but only the rectors, deans, professors and lecturers. Except from the British and American universities German has its own system of draping and colors. To follow Anglo-American some German new established university also use academic dress but not reviving the tradition of old.
In New Zealand, university graduates apparels are almost same with the University of Cambridge. Depending the receiving degree and diploma the wear either hood or scarf. For various faculties they have various color of apparel. For the faculty of Architecture, Arts, BBIM, BBA, Commerce, Dentistry, Economics, Engineering, Fine Arts, Human Biology, Law has their own color consecutively Lemon, Pink, Apricot, Burgundy, Orange, Violet, Copper, Dark Violet, Gold, Crimson, and Light Blue for garment.
In Spain, Queen Isabella (2nd) established several rules about the academic dress for academic regalia in the year of 1850 according to the centuries old custom of Spain. For different field they wear different garment. In university, academic dress is only worn at the opening of academic year.
