The third generation is an important part of every society. This is especially true in countries like Albania, where elderly people have an important role in family life. Like all age groups, they have specific needs and rights. These needs not only have to be respected by the people around them, but should also be taken into consideration by the government so that the facilities needed, can be provided for them.
As grandparents play a fundamental role in the education and upbringing of their grandchildren, by providing for them, you are providing for the future. If elderly people are fit physically and mentally, they will be able to devote more time to the new generation, thus imparting to them knowledge and moral values.
Health services, transportation and leisure activity centres are far from adequate. As pensions are very low, they are not able to spend any money in order to improve their living conditions.
Cost-effective and modern transportation means would enable elderly people to become much more active in everyday life, as they would be able to move about freely within the city and within the country, without being dependent on other family members. As they pay taxes to the government, health services should be provided to them free of charge. Illnesses often are easy to cope with if they are caught at an early stage of their development, which would be possible through regular check-ups.
The people who are able to do this now will face the same situation in a few years if they do not act!
