Macs are becoming increasingly popular and continue to grab operating system market share. What makes macs so popular? Perhaps it's the hype, brilliant "I'm a mac" commercials. Or perhaps macs are just better choice. After all, macs just work.
Since the release of OS X mac operating system is build upon stable and mature core of Unix system, BSD in this specific case. It was designed with security in mind. It's not plagued with viruses and other malware like Windows machines. There are no annoying security alerts, warnings and pop-ups, so nothing is interrupting your work or entertainment.
Because OS X is build on top of Unix system, its performance is just amazing. System is very responsive, boots up and shuts down very quickly. There are no hogging anti-viruses or firewalls to bring the system to a crawl. Anti-virus is just unnecessary and built-in firewall is based on BSD famous packet filter.
External devices support is another good argument when switching to mac. Macs seamlessly configure the devices without user interruption. Printers, scanners, digital cameras are ready to work just a few moments after being plugged in.
By default macs have web browser that properly display most web pages, Safari. It properly display pages containing SVG graphics, HTNL5 elements or CSS3 styles. Windows users, not so lucky. Out of the box web browser is far behind.
Macs also regularly check for software updates. Again, end user doesn't have to configure anything, all software included with mac gets updated as soon as updates are available.
Macs also seamlessly integrate with Active Directory domain environments and Exchange servers, so they can be easily used in big enterprises as well. There is also OS X server system that provides directory services, mail and calendar servers and a lot more. So replacing windows environment is as easy as replacing computers.
Besides from all the aspects that macs have in the software there is also a hardware advantage. Newest macs often are build on latest components unavailable to other computer manufacturers. So they always introduce bleeding edge technology. Mac computers are also built with aesthetics in mind. Their dimensions are always smaller compared to other computers and surprisingly silent. Macs also features superior screen quality with bright and vivid colors hardly ever found in other computers, perhaps only in high-end graphic design workstations.
But perhaps the biggest advantage that macs have is product ecosystem. Macs, iPods, iPhones, iTunes, Time Machine, iPads, etc. It all integrates together and just simply works. No more searching for music, books or movies in different stores, now it's all available in one place.
