Best Way to Clean a Rug

Cleaning a Rug

  • Perhaps the easiest way, though not always the cheapest, is to use a carpet cleaner. If you don't own one, many home improvement stores rent them out. Pick a cleaning solution designed for carpet cleaning and follow the directions for both. Make sure to give the rug enough time to dry; it helps to place a fan nearby to circulate air over it to speed the process along.

Some rugs may be small enough to fit into a washing machine but check the care instructions first. If you do decide to use the washing machine, don't use the dryer. Hang the rug someplace to dry; outside is best. Avoid rolling up a rug that isn't completely dry or it may begin to accumulate mold.

Hand washing may be the only option for some rugs such as the expensive Persian types. Mix warm soapy water in a bucket and add a cup of white vinegar. The vinegar is slightly acidic and can help to eliminate any odors. Make sure that the rug is vacuumed and free of loose dirt before you begin. Use a clean sponge dipped in the solution and gently scrub the rug from one side to the other. It helps to scrub in the direction of the pile. Rinse the rug with clean water and a clean sponge. Use a squeegee to expel any excess water from the rug and set it outside to dry. If you have to dry it indoors, use a fan to circulate air over it and help it dry faster. When the rug is completely dry, vacuum over it to fluff it back up.

    Routine Cleaning

  • Clean up spills as soon as they happen to help prevent stains. Hydrogen peroxide is great for eliminating stains, but it isn't safe for all rugs. Test an inconspicuous area of the rug before using it as it may fade the colors. Vacuum the rug often to avoid dirt getting lodged deeply into the fibers. Periodically sprinkle baking soda all over the rug and leave it to sit for a few hours before vacuuming it up. This will help eliminate any unwanted odors
