iPhone 4G – AT&T the Only Provider for iPhone 4.0 for Now

iPhone 4G – AT&T the Only Provider for iPhone 4.0 for Now.  When Apple released the iPhone 3G and 3GS, they gave the AT&T mobile network exclusive rights to the phone in the US. Now, with the release of the new iPhone 4 coming from Apple in just a couple of weeks, it seems that they are set to do the exact same thing.

Before the confirmation of the release of the new iPhone 4 on Monday, there were rumors that the exclusivity of the new iPhone would be given to Verizon. These rumors were fueled as Verizon seems closer to deploying 4G speeds on their network than AT&T, and recent research shows strong demand for a Verizon iPhone 4G. As such, to some, they seemed like a likely candidate for the iPhone 4.

It seems that although there were rumors of this, Apple has decided to stick with its long time partner AT&T for the time being. So for now, the iPhone 4.0 will only be sold officially on the AT&T network.

Since Apple’s recent announcement of the iPhone 4.0 at the WWDC, however, rumors have continued to circulate regarding the release of the iPhone on other networks.  Some experts speculate that it could become available on Verizon as soon as late 2010 or as late as 2012.

Finally, it should be noted that the use of the term iPhone 4G in this article refers to “4th Generation,” not 4G speeds.  AT&T does not currently offer a 4G data network.  The new iPhone’s official name is the iPhone 4, but has commonly been referred to by iPhone fans as the iPhone 4G – perhaps a misnomer.
