Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night

Parenthood sure brings about a lot of joy and happiness, especially for first time parents, but along with it you also need to deal with various problems, one of them being baby sleep. Most parents find putting their baby to sleep peacefully through the night a difficult task and this one of the common fields of parenthood where they seek help and advice. Getting baby to sleep through the night is not important only for the parents, it is also important for the baby as it is the first step taken towards sleep training her. The development of a healthy sleep pattern is important for the baby's overall healthy growth and development.

Baby Sleeping Patterns

To help your baby sleep through the night, it is first essential for you to understand the baby sleeping pattern and some peculiar habits that they display. Unlike adults, babies do not have a 7 hour or 12 hour sleeping pattern, it develops gradually as the baby grows. Therefore, you should not expect or enforce that the baby sleep for long hours before she is at least six months old. After 6 months of age, babies usually are able to sleep for 5 to 7 hours at a stretch. They might wake up due to hunger, wet nappy or a blocked nose, etc. Some may not be able to due to reasons like a medical problem or an unfavorable sleeping environment. Often, babies develop some peculiar habits while or before falling asleep like being rocked or carried, a lullaby or a story. These help them fall asleep, so you must make sure that the habit is not discontinued or else the baby might develop discomfort with the sleep routine.
