Top 10 Tips to Prepare For a Road Trip

Whenever you plan to hit the road, these 10 tried-and-true tips from a professional organizer will help you prepare for a better trip.

1. Have your car serviced and ready to go, including a check of the engine oil, coolant and automatic transmission levels. Replace worn windshield wipers and top off the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Check and adjust tire pressure, if needed, including the spare.

2. Be prepared by getting current, accurate routing information. Leave your trip itinerary with family or friends.

3. Make sure you have plenty of change and dollar bills for toll booths, vending machines and other enticements.

4. Don't forget to pack a car emergency kit with battery cables, flashlights, flares, rain poncho, tire pressure gauge, tire inflator and sealer, and other must haves. Make sure the kit is easily available so that you don't have to look for it in an emergency. And, don't forget to take along a charged cell phone.

5. The glove compartment is a great "drawer" when traveling. Pack it with items such as maps, a notepad and pen, hand wipes small packages of Kleenex, a small first aid kit, extra sunglasses, an address book with contact information for doctors, insurance agent, etc.

6. Keep everything that pertains to your trip in one packet or folder: reservations, directions, important papers, suggested eateries, sightseeing information, etc.

7. Choose your traveling suitcase first - suitcase size will determine how much you can take. Pack a large suitcase for the family to share, and a small suitcase for every family member for overnight stops.

8. Create a checklist of items you want to pack. Put all of the items in one place and then remove any that you can do without. Everyone seems to pack more than they need!

9. Bring a basket filled with napkins, water, cups, snacks and a small garbage bag.

10. Pack a light blanket for those who want to get a little shut eye. The hours pass more quickly if you have travel games, reading materials, books on CD, iPods, portable DVD players and other activities on hand.
