Minimum standards for restaurants

When it comes to restaurants, everyone has different opinions. One of the fascinating differences about humans is how they react differently to taste; meaning that one person's five-star steak could well be another's food not fit for the dog.

However, there are certain standards which all restaurants are expected to adhere - no matter what type of food it is serving. Regardless of the quality of their food, restaurants will lose a lot of business if they fail to meet these standards.

This article takes a look at some of the unwritten expectations of those visiting a restaurant.

Hygiene

One of the basic expectations for those eating out is to be able to eat in a hygienic atmosphere. Restaurant managers should make sure that all elements of the restaurant - from the kitchen to the restaurant furniture - is kept clean at all times. Those not adhering to basic hygiene standards could face being shut down by environmental health inspectors.

Customer service

Customers at a restaurant generally expect staff to do all they can to ensure that their trip is enjoyable. Staff are expected to find the answers to any questions that a customer may have, ensure that any dietary requirements are adhered to and provide an enjoyable atmosphere for any customers.

The standard of customer service expected tends to be generally higher in restaurants which charge more for their dining experience.

Consistency

One of the key factors of a successful business is consistency and this is arguably no more the case than with restaurants. Managers should strive to create a consistent great experience for their customers regardless of which staff are working and how busy the restaurant is. This consistency is what allows businesses to franchise their services and become more profitable.

Sticking to these guidelines should be seen as an absolute minimum for restaurants hoping to provide a quality service for their customers.
