You need to wear the robe during the entire graduation ceremony. The most common color of robe is black. Shoes and dress pants should typically match the color of the robe. The robe consists of graduation gown,
. Ensure that the cap with the mortarboard is level with the ground. The caps should be worn during the entire ceremony. Men might be required to remove the cap during prayer, national anthem or Alma Mater. Cues for removing caps at these times should be addressed beforehand but if they are not watch the presiding officer and follow their lead.
Place the tassel on the right side before degrees are awarded. Once degrees are award, move the tassel to the left. Although this is common practice, this is not an official rule that is used by all universities and may not be done. Put the graduate hood on over the robe. For some degrees, like a master's or doctoral, the graduate will be hooded as they are given the diploma. For degrees awarded en mass, the hood should be worn over the robes during the entire ceremony. Despite this rule, many universities have removed the hood for bachelor's degree and the bachelor's robe will be worn without a hood. Roll the edge of the hood outward so that the inside colors of the hood show. The end of the hood will look something like a fin and should not be turned inside out but hang parallel to the ground.
