Happy desk, happy office

Office desks, although rudimentary, are the key piece of furniture in your office environment and are incredibly important to the employees who use them.

Office desks somehow feel like they become 'ours' after a certain amount of time; much in the same way that you 'have' a certain side of the bed to sleep on.

However, employees will only become defensive over their office desk if you give them something worth fighting over in the first place! The following are a few considerations to bear in mind when choosing the most appropriate desk for your employees.

Size

Clearly the most important decision to consider when buying office furniture is whether it fits the area it is designed for. Not only this, but does it also have enough space for your employee to be as effective and efficient as possible?

Some enterprises, such as graphic design agencies, are naturally going to need more space for their staff to work on. Perhaps even if they don't need the desktop to design, they may at least need the space to place computing equipment on.

For others, such as paper-based offices - yes, they still exist - you will need to have ample room for filing, or a desk that has plenty of storage space. Either way, think about function before form. Unless your desk is purely for showing off, of course.

Suitability

Similar to answering the size question but, is your office desk suitable for the environment? This means does it fit in with its surroundings, or does it come equipped ready for computing? For example, many desks will have enough space to push electronic cables through - but not all of them. Should it be wooden, you may be expected to do this yourself. If it's glass on the other hand, you're not exactly going to be inclined to get your glass cutter out and bore your own hole in are you?

Equally, considering material use, are yours appropriate for spills and stains? Do they offer the strength that is required of them? These questions will also have to be asked before splashing out on the wrong unit.

In summary, whenever deciding what office desks to buy, always think function before form. Then you can just let your employees make it their own.
